Some things have come up this week to make me question my way of mothering.
Example #1
I am pretty eclectic when it comes to music, and I HAVE to listen to it when I drive. I pretty much like anything with a beat and, fortunately, my kids have the same taste. I never realized how questionable some of my taste is until I heard Avery totally singing along to "Take Me On the Floor" by the Veronicas. It made me think about some of the other songs my kids sing along to.
* Anything and everything by Lady Gaga.
Avery is especially partial to "Beautiful, Dirty Rich" and "Boys Boys Boys".
* "Paper Planes" by M.I.A.
* "Thong Song" by the Glee cast - this one I turned off as soon as they asked me what a thong was, so I should get some brownie points for that, right?
* "If You Seek Amy" by Britney Spears
* "Good Girls Gone Bad" by Cobra Starship
* "I Know You Want Me" by Pit Bull
* "Single Ladies" by Beyonce
* "Tik Tok" by Kesha
I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that stand out and make me feel guilty right now. I guess I'm going to have to resort to more "family-friendly" music for now and save my stuff for when the kids are occupied with a movie :(
Example #2
We recently got a PS3 and a subscription to Netflix. This has resulted in extreme abuse of the instant-streaming feature for the kids. It's ridiculous.
Example #3
I'm still in a "getting over the holidays" funk and have been neglecting some household chores (ok, I've been neglecting pretty much all of them). One of the biggest ones has been cooking. The other night, Ben was at a late meeting so the kids ate string cheese, peanut butter and crackers and swiss cake rolls. For real.
Example #4
This one happened today. When I was younger (like 8) I begged my mom to let me get my ears pierced, but she made me wait until I was 10. The day of my 10th birthday I went to the salon, got them pierced and watched as my younger sister (who was 8 at the time), climbed up and got hers done.
I guess I'm still a little upset over it and that may be why I did what I did today.
Avery got her ears pierced.
We had talked about it for awhile. She knew it was going to hurt a little, but she also knew what she could look forward to. She did awesome. She cried and I felt guilty, especially when she said, "I don't want these anymore" as soon as they were in. She forgave me and is super excited about them now.

Well, actually I think -- and your kids would agree -- that you are an AWESOME mom. Avery's ears are adorable, btw.
I've done all those things on your list! Except I never buy Swiss CAke ROlls because I eat them all myself.
I will be sure not to show Arabella this post because she will die of jealousy! She wants her ears pierced so badly but Mister thinks it's disgusting. India just barely got hers done and she's 14! (and she cried BTW). I have a friend who lives in Brazil and they actually pierce the babies ears when they're still in the hospital! I had to wait until I was 12 which seems very cruel. I pretty much forced India to have hers done.
My kids Love to sing "All the Single Ladies" and flip their hands back and forth. It's hilarious!
I'm going to let Daphne get her ears pierced as soon as she wants them too. AS Jennie said, we had to wait until we were 12 and it was torture. So I don't think you're a bad mom at all.
holy crow, i could have written this post!!!! :) amazing how much we have in common!!!!
hey at least you only had to have avery's ears pieced once!!!! allie had to have one of hers re-done twice...yep, a total of 3 piercings in one ear cuz it just never looked right. the simultaneous ear piecing wasn't exactly simultaneus and when allie flinched for the first the other one went in a spilt second later. :( talk about feeling like a bad mom...
